چکیده

The New Crops Program of Virginia State University, established in 1991, has evaluated the production feasibility of a wide array of leguminous crops including chickpea, faba bean, mungbean, and pigeonpea under Virginia’s agro-climatic conditions (Bhardwaj et al. 1996). Such crops could provide alternatives to farmers in Virginia and adjoining Mid-Atlantic States. These farmers, in general, rely on a limited number of crops and are interested in diversification. The close proximity of these farmers to the Washington, DC metropolitan area where the international community is familiar with these crops can provide a market for these crops. The evaluations of chickpea, pigeonpea, and mungbean were conducted as replicated field experiments. The evaluations of faba bean and lupin germplasm were conducted by planting single row plots of each accession. All field experiments were conducted at the Randolph Farm of Virginia State University which is located approximately 37° 15' N and 077° 30.8' W.

Nutritive quality and protein production from grain legumes in a boreal climate.

BACKGROUND Boreal cropping systems are heavily focused on the production of small-grain cereals; to improve their resilience to climate change and to achieve food and feed security, diversification is needed. This study investigated the potential of faba bean, narrow-leafed lupin and lentil as protein crops in southern Finland, where faba bean is traditional but the other two are novel. RESUL...

Effects of Break Crops on Yield and Grain Protein Concentration of Barley in a Boreal Climate

Rotation with dicotyledonous crops to break cereal monoculture has proven to be beneficial to successive cereals. In two fields where the soil had been subjected to prolonged, continuous cereal production, two 3-year rotation trials were established. In the first year, faba bean, turnip rape and barley were grown, as first crops, in large blocks and their residues tilled into the soil after har...

Evaluation of Lupin as a New Food/Feed Crop in the US Mid-Atlantic Region*

INTRODUCTION White lupin (Lupinus albus L. Fabaceae) is one of four economically important species of the genus Lupinus, which consists of over 300 annual species (Hondelmann 1984). The other three species are: L. angustifolius, L. luteus, and L. mutabilis. Approximately 100 species of Lupinus occur in the US and Canada and most are native. White lupin, an old crop for the southern United State...
